Mulled Apple Cider
Ingredients
- 2 litres apple juice
- 2 cinnamon sticks (~3 inches each)
- 2 whole cloves
- 3 small slices fresh ginger
- 1 tsp whole allspice
- ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
- ⅛ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 apple, sliced
- Brandy or bourbon, optional
Method
- Place the cinnamon, cloves and allspice on a double thickness of cheesecloth; bring up corners of cloth and tie with a string to form a bag.
- Place the cider and brown sugar in a slow cooker; stir until sugar dissolves and add the spice bag.
- Place orange slices on top. Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours or until heated through. Discard spice bag.
- You can use a heavy-bottomed saucepan or stock pot on the stovetop, it needs to be stirred periodically and monitored to make sure it doesn’t come to a full boil.
Change up the cider:
Apple cider is the traditional choice for mulling but pear cider and other fruit ciders are equally good in this recipe. Apple ciders that have other fruit or berries added in are also a great choice.
